National Walk to School Day

Finally, an obscure observance noted by more than our family!  Yes, October 3rd, was National Walk to School Day.  We are health and environmentally conscious so we "put our best foot forward" to participate.

As Healthy Lifestyles Chair (PTA), Keri assisted the lead mom, Maya, the Environmental Chair on this fun event.  We were so grateful for all the extra help that came our way. Keri with her best bud, Kari Garvin, created and displayed posters to promote the event.  Neal and Grandma J huffed and puffed to fill over 45 balloons the night before the event.  The morning of, Keri and her mom were up before the sun placing balloons and streamers along the designated route.  Grandma J had the special privilege to walk the parade with her two grandchildren clutching their posters.
Falcon Pride!

Kenzie, Baby Supergirl, and Sophie!
While the children made their way onto school grounds, Smoothie King handed out smoothie samples, Keri and others handed out reusable water bottles and dog tags to commemorate the event, and others collected the children's posters to be displayed and judged in a contest.  Thanks to Kari G. for taking the time to snap a few shots of our kids.

Clean up didn't take long and it was all totally worth it.  We had approximately 400 participants honor Walk to School Day this year!  In an elementary school that educates 645+/- students that is quite an accomplishment, especially because most of our kids are transported to school because of distance.  It was a great time all in the name of good health, cleaner air, and fun!

Update (10/29/12): Our friend, Kari, just alerted us that the kids were featured on the schools website slideshow! Yep! Those are our cuties!

I just want you to know, that if I were as witty as you, I'd comment on your blog (and everyone's, actually, to show off my wittiness) more. All I can ever think of is "That is soooo cute." You have such a knack for one liners and I always laugh when you comment. So thanks for elevating the level of my blog :) And also, thanks for celebrating obscure holidays, because that's just fun.
