Happy Birthday Jesus!

Merry Christmas to all our family and friends! We hope you enjoyed celebrating the birth of our Savior and being with those you love.

Sophie continued to have a low grade fever throughout the day. But she woke this snowy white morning and we showed her Santa's empty cookie plate. Then she looked out to the back porch and seeing another empty plate, exclaimed, "Oh noooo! Carrots gone!" We said that the reindeer had come and eaten them. Then she checked her stocking and pulled out a cool tape measure.

Later that morning, Opa and Oma showed up for brunch which was a breakfast egg casserole, fruit salad, roasted potatoes, and OJ. Soon after filling our bellies we began opening gifts. Then Opa and Oma were on their way to visit with more family.

We spent the day on the phone with family, trying to find a home for all the new toys, and playing, playing, playing. It was a great Christmas! Thank you to all who remembered us with phone calls, cards, plates of goodies, and gifts. We truly appreciate your kindness and generosity.
Darn! The dress was too small! A lucky win for Sophie!Strike a pose, there's nothing to it...Goody, goody, goody! A light saber for Daddy, no Rhys, no Daddy, no Rhys. T'was the Night Before Christmas...

God's working on a White Christmas in the Dallas area. It was in the upper 60s/low 70s yesterday. Today snow!Poor Sophie has been sick with something viral (H1N1 and strep were ruled out) and has had a fever for three days now. She was her joyous self during the day and okay this evening but during her last hour up, her temperature went back up. So she took some Motrin and gladly went to bed.

We had completed all our Christmas Eve activities anyway. We had pizza for dinner. We were going to go to our friends', Dave and Liz', house and join in their tradition of making pizza and enjoying each other's company but with Sophie still sick, we didn't want to wear her out and share her bug. Neal was unwilling to part with the idea of pizza, though, so we got a veggie and cowboy. Then Sophie prepared a plate of carrots for Santa's reindeer and put it out on the back porch.Following that we got out the Nativity set and we reviewed the events of the first Christmas. We watched The Nativity (which is about 5 minutes long) and stopped it at key points to talk about and add corresponding figures to the nativity scene. Then we baked cookies from the dough she helped to make days earlier. We all got to taste one to make sure they would be good enough for Santa. While they baked in the oven, Mom and Sophie danced around the living room, dining room, and kitchen to The Virgin Mary had a Baby Boy, an upbeat carol with Caribbean percussion. So with Sophie in bed and Rhys soon to be, Neal and Keri would like to wish all our friends and family a Merry Christmas and goodnight!

Jingle Bell Rock!

Neal and I wanted to do something for our friends this Christmas so we offered to throw a Christmas party for their kids while their parents went out and enjoyed each others company. We had 9 total if you count our own children in the bunch. From oldest to youngest we had Jillian, Briana, Jake, Ben, Isabel, Kenzie, Ella, Sophie, and Rhys.Kids played with toys until cheese pizza and juice, which was generously provided by some parents, was served.
Then a myriad of Christmas coloirng pages were made available-everything from nativities to Santa to carolers.
After coloring, the kids participated in what turned out to be the big hit for the night--a Christmas Disco Freeze. We played contemporary, upbeat Christmas songs from a mix CD and turned the music off periodically for them to freeze in whatever position they were in.

Our finalists were Jake, Jillian, and Brianna. Brianna won the final round. The group had a blast and were sweaty and thirsty after showing us their best moves.
After a water break, they were each given materials to make thier own beaded candy cane ornament to take home. There were beads all over the floor. It was great. It took a lot of patience and sometimes a bit of help, but they got it done. Two extra were made to give during our next activity.Caroling! We put on our coats and shoes and headed to the neighbor's house. We sang Rudolph the Red Nosed Riendeer and Jingle Bells and presented them with one of the candy cane ornaments. At the second house, we merely whispered Rudoph because they had a sleeping one-year-old.Back at the house, Keri entertained the happy bunch with a game of Santa Says (Simon Says) while Neal prepared the green rice krispie treat wreaths for the kids to decorate. A bit of vanilla frosting, colored sugar, and red hot candies, did quite nicely. Then we had one last game. A hunt. The kids had a small stocking that they had to hide within two rooms. A bit of the stocking had to be showing. Whoever found it next got to hide it next. Jake blew us away with his amazing seeking skills. He found it several times!

Following a quick pajama change for anyone who wanted to, we put on the holiday movies. The kids watched Frosty, The Grinch (cartoon), and Rudolph while munching on popcorn and apple slices.
The kids were dropped off at our house by 6 pm and we told parents to pick them up no later than 11 pm. We had two sets of parents show up around 9:30 and because things were going so well and the kids had not heard the knocks, we quietly popped our head out the door and told them to go away until later. They apparently found something to do and the kids were picked up closer to 11 o'clock.

Neal and Keri had so much fun and it appeared the kids were happy and entertained the entire time. It was great celebrating with them!

More Fun in the Leaves

Today we had Sophie's pal, Ella, over for a play date while her busy mom was in charge of her son's classroom Christmas party. Here they are enjoying the pile of leaves in our front yard. I love cheap fun.

Rifftrax

On Wednesday night Neal and I went to a phantom showing of Rifftrax (the same people who did Mystery Science Theater 3000 on Comedy Central). They mocked a bunch of pitiful Christmas shorts and we laughed aloud for at least an hour and a half.

Keri's Christmas Miracle

It happened yesterday when Sophie awoke a bit upset and I offered to hold her. There I was, sitting on the couch, my daughter looking like an angel as she returned to slumber in my arms. Sweet and solemn Christmas music played softly on the stereo and the lights on the Christmas tree were aglow. Rhys was quietly dozing in his room. It was perfect and still. I took it all in with a deep breath and my eyes were misty as I thought about how blessed I am.
